Mbeki as ballet master
Moses is a dance about leadership in contemporary South Africa. It is based mainly on the ‘I am an African’ speech by former president Thabo Mbeki in 1996. The dancers juxtapose the promises made in Mbeki’s speech and the actual events of ordinary South Africans. When Mbeki suddenly resigned, Musa Hlatshwayo, the choreographer got the idea of revealing the detrimental effect politics has on those who are not empowered. Moses is striking in that it is an explicit reflection on South Africa’s situation told through contemporary dance. It boldly points out that South Africans are lost without proper leadership.
